The CD-ROM that comes with the Dell 2001FP monitor includes the monitor driver and it may be just fine. But I'd rather get the latest version from the Dell support site. After clicking the link to get to the support site, find it by entering "2001FP driver" in the search box.
Previously I've used the Samsung 955DF CRT monitor. The CD-ROM that came with it also includes the monitor driver. Unfortunately, the CD-ROM did not include the version of the driver that's appropriate for Windows XP. Navigating through the Samsung web-site, I finally found the Samsung 955DF driver for Windows XP. Start by following the "Computer & Related Products" link on the main page - then continue on to "Monitors" from the Computer & Related Products page - then click on "Support-Monitor" from the choices listed on the side of the monitor page - to finally reach the page where you can choose to bring up monitor driver downloads.
The installation procedure for either a flat panel monitor driver or CRT monitor driver is the same. Download the driver. It fits on a single floppy disk. The file is actually a self-extracting zip-archive file. Double-click on it and expand the four files inside. Double-click on it and expand the four files onto the floppy disk as well. All five files will fit on the same floppy disk. The file with the ".inf" extension is the actual monitor driver, but you don't really need to know this for the install. Take the floppy disk with the monitor driver over to the new computer and place it in the floppy drive.
To install the driver, right-click on the desktop and select the Properties option from the pop-up menu.
The Display Properties window appears. Click on the "Settings" tab.
On the "Settings" tab, click on the "Advanced" button.
Click on the "Monitor" tab.
Click on the "Properties "button. If the "Properties" button is grayed out (and probably the Monitor Type is listed as "Default Monitor" rather than "Plug and Play Monitor" as shown below) then the video card driver will need to be installed first and then come back to this page to do the monitor driver install.
Click on the Driver tab.
Click on the Update Driver button.
The Hardware Update Wizard appears prompting to connect to Windows Update to search for software. Select the "No, not this time" option and click on the "Next" button.
Then select the "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" option.
Then click on the "Next" button.
The "Hardware Update Wizard" window is asks you to "Please choose your search and installation options". Select "Search for the best driver in these locations", leave the box checked for "Search removable media" and click the "Next" button.
The "Hardware Update Wizard" access the floppy disk in the floppy drive and quickly installs the monitor driver. When it's finished, it displays this window. Click the "Finish" button.
Click the "Close" button, then the "Ok" button on the next two windows to return to the desktop.
Well, that wasn't such a chore, was it? The good news is, the monitor driver never really needs updating. If you look again at the monitor tab, it now looks like this and shows that the specific monitor is recognized.
