Computer Assembly - How To Assemble A PC

Ready The Monitor

The Dell flat panel monitor comes out of the box like this. I've circled the DVI cable in blue and the power cable in red since I'll be referring to those next.

Most of the connectors on the Dell 2001FP flat panel can be seen by laying the flat panel face down as shown in this picture. The flat panel comes out of the box with the blue video cable connected. While this will work and is a standard connection supported by any video card, it will not deliver the video quality that was the purpose of getting a flat panel monitor in the first place. A flat panel should be used with the white DVI cable for best viewing quality.

Here's a closer look at the connectors. The blue video cable has been unplugged since I'm using the DVI connector. The DVI cable is shown circled in blue in the picture at the top of the page. Each end of the DVI cable has a gray plastic protector over the pins and these should be removed. Plug the DVI cable into the DVI connector shown circled in blue in the picture below. The pins of the DVI cable are keyed with the DVI connector so it can only be plugged in one way, and it doesn't matter which end of the DVI cable is connected to the monitor. Next plug the power cord, shown circled in red in the picture at the top of the page, into the power connector shown circled in red in the picture below. The power cord is also keyed so that it can only be plugged in one way. The power cabling for the flat panel is in two parts counting the power cord that connects from the wall outlet to the power adapter as one part and the power adapter with it's cable to the monitor as the second part. Both these parts are included in the outer red circle above, with the inner red circle showing the plug that connects to the monitor.

With these connections made, it looks like this. The DVI cable can be tightened into place so it doesn't work lose using the screws built into the cable shown circled in green.

Mount the flat panel onto the stand, making sure it clicks and locks into place, and it's ready to go. The height and tilt of the flat panel is adjustable.

Setup for a CRT monitor is a little easier since the cables are built into the back of the monitor. It comes like this out of the box.

Tilt the monitor on it's side and slide the base into place until it locks. Remove the red protective cover from the end of the monitor cord. It now looks like this.
