Computer Assembly - How To Assemble A PC
The Sound Card and Speakers
The Gigabyte P55A-UD4P motherboard has very good built-in sound. Good enough that an add-on sound card is not needed. Of course, speakers are needed. I'm using a 2.1 speaker system, namely the Logitech S2220 speaker system. This is packaged rather plainly.
The 2.1 means two satellite speakers and one sub-woofer. This arrangement provides great sound without taking up too much desk space. The speakers come with a desktop volume control and headphone jack. This makes volume adjustment and muting quite easy. It also allows headphones and earphones with very short cords to still be quite usable.

This model inserts into a PCI slot on the motherboard (not the newer PCI-E slots, called PCI Express).
An add-on sound card is not needed by most. The built-in sound provided by motherboards such as the ones I recommend will satisfy most listeners, including me.
But a sound card provides noticeably better sound and improves performance.
Most motherboards come with at least one PCI slot, but otherwise there is a PCI-E version.

Identical to the ASUS Xonar D1 except it uses a PCI-E slot on the motherboard.
The DX also uses a 4-pin power connector from the power supply.
